DHP Family Contribute to BBC documentary on Nottingham As the Decade’s Music City

Ferocious Dog

Manchester, Liverpool and London have all had their time in the musical spotlight. Now, a new documentary celebrates Nottingham’s talent, organisations and partnerships that have fuelled a thriving local music scene; a scene which is gaining national attention.

The film features local artists, such as DID, Jake Bugg, Sleaford Mods and Saint Raymond and charts developments in the Nottingham music scene over the past 15 years. From Jake Bugg’s first radio performance, to Sleaford Mods’ latest successes – the documentary traces the incredible growth of local talent and looks forward to current emerging artists.

With interviews from key figures from the Nottingham music scene, such as Nusic’s Mark Del, Confetti’s Craig Chettle and DHP Family’s George Akins and Anton Lockwood  – the programme explores the diversity of Nottingham’s music scene – not just the performers, but also the educators, producers and promoters.

The film was commissioned by the BBC from Notts TV, and was produced by local production company Spool Films – the company behind the critically acclaimed Nottingham Forest documentary I Believe in Miracles – based in the heart of Nottingham’s Creative Quarter at Antenna Media Centre.

Mary Kearns, Producer at Spool Films: “Nottingham’s music scene is so diverse and those behind it are incredibly determined and gutsy; championing local talent on a massive scale. We’ve seen some huge successes for many Nottingham artists and bands. Spool have been involved in filming the music scene here, for a long time, so we were ready to share an insight into some of our more recent musical history and to really celebrate it.”

Music City: Is Nottingham the UK’s new hit factory? is airing on BBC One East Midlands on Sunday 24 September 2017 at 23:00 and will also be available via the BBC iPlayer.
